Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D may control brain serotonin

Business Standard - ‎1 hour ago‎
Eating fish and soaking up some sun may protect brain health, a new study suggests. Vitamin D and marine omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the symptoms associated with a broad array of brain disorders by controlling brain serotonin, scientists say.

Here's what your urine says about your health

Do you check the colour of your urine? If you don't, you probably should because it could hold vital clues about the state of your health.

According to The Cleveland Clinic, the shade of your urine can tell a lot about a person's health, and they've produced a helpful chart to aid people when checking.
Designed to establish whether one is drinking enough water, it can also indicate urinary tract infections or other health issues.

The colour also shows up traces of certain foods and prescribed medications. A clinic spokesman said, "Human urine has been a useful tool of diagnosis since the earliest days of medicine. The colour, density, and smell of urine can reveal much about the state of our health." Have a look at this basic guide as a starting point:

NO COLOUR

If your urine is clear, like water, then it is likely to be a sign that you're over-hydrated. It could also indicate you've ingested a diuretic, a substance found in coffee which forces the body to get rid of water.

PALE TO DARK YELLOW

The lighter the shade of yellow, the more hydrated a person is. As the colour darkens, one is recommended to drink more water.

AMBER OR HONEY

If your urine is a deep, golden yellow then your body isn't getting enough fluid. In such cases, pour yourself a large glass of H20.

SYRUP OR BROWN

This colour could indicate liver or kidney problems. It could also just mean you've been gorging on aloe or fava beans. If drinking more water doesn't change the brown colour, visit your GP.

PINK TO REDDISH

You should visit a doctor immediately if your urine is pink. It could be traces of blood, which could mean kidney disease, prostate problems, urinary tract infections, kidney or bladder stones or even cancer. Less worrying, the colour could also indicate that you've had beetroot or blackberries.

ORANGE

Apart from dehydration, it could be caused by laxa tives and chemotherapy drugs, as well as blood thinners. Food dyes, carrots or too much vitamin C can also cause an orange tint

"proposed mechanism of action for CES is that the pulses of electric current increase the ability of neural cells to produce serotonin, dopamine, DHEA, endorphins and other neurotransmitters, thereby stabilizing the neurohormonal system"

Promising, but not yet proven. But given minimal side effects, experimentation with CES is a reasonable choice if other treatments prove ineffective or are poorly tolerated.

Worth trying at some point? Should we ask the doc? There are devices available in the US market. CES Ultra and Fisher Wallace.

New Delhi: A new research led by European Molecular Biology Laboratory has revealed the reason behind the rich diversity found in mammals. The research, which was published in journal Cell, also explained why dolphin isn’t a cat.

Researchers explained the reason behind the divergence of mammals by examining genome sequences in around twenty nine mammals and comparing gene regulation in liver cells from twenty key species.
The team explained that even both the changes can occur at the same time when amino acid sequences evolve very quickly.

Head of Vertebrate Genomics, Paul Flicek said, their research focuses on evolution re-purposes things that exist in all species, to make each species unique, and by looking at gene promoters and enhancers in many different mammals. The study demonstrated that species-specific enhancers come from ancient DNA.
“What we’ve shown is that evolution re purposes things that exist in all species, to make each species unique,”  Flicek said.

“By looking at gene promoters and enhancers in many different mammals, we demonstrated that species-specific enhancers come from ancient DNA – that evolution captures DNA that’s been around for a long time, and uses it for gene regulation in specific tissues,” he added.

A biological clock can predict longivity

A group of scientists has identified a biological clock that could help predict how long we live, according to a study.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with researchers in Australia and the US studied chemical changes to DNA to establish an individual's biological age which they compared with their actual age, the Mirrorreported Friday.

The results showed that people with biological age greater than their true age were more likely to die sooner than those whose biological and actual ages were the same.
